One of the weirdly nice things about not being signed to a record label or being tied to someone else’s schedule is releasing music when you like.
Not waiting around for a marketing meeting or for someone to get back from Cannes or something; nope, this stuff is fresh and straight out of the oven.
So, for your tasty lunchtime treat today is ‘Glass Animals Walk The City’.
It’s one of those little tests I do when I pick an artist(s) and do something approximating them, but which sounds nothing like them by the time we’re at the end of the production line. A bit like that game where you see something for 5 seconds and have to draw it from memory.
In this case, I decided to do something in the style of DJ Shadow with a little Flying Lotus.
Of course, you can kinda hear it (?) but it just ended up sounding like ASMC to me. Probably for the best.
Lots of soul-y beats, subtle horns, tinkly chopped up bells via the Life plugin, plus - after my shoulder enforced layoff - some proper authentic bass guitar!
Video-wise, this shouted Japan (in this case, Tokyo’s Shibuya) to me. No idea why, but the sort of provocative, alternative night-time lifestyle imagery seemed to fit.
So, here’s to keeping it fresh, getting new tunes out there whilst they’re hot and taking an unusual walk on the wildside through the city where the glass animals roam.
Till next tune (…sorry)
